Surfin’ Australia
- Category: Australia
G’day Frothers, the first thing you’ll hear when you taste some of the Aussie's surf culture. Australia is renowned for great surf beaches and offers great spots to practice along its shore. The East Coast is in particular famous with towns like Byron Bay, Noosa, and Sydney as well with Manly beach and the Northern Beaches. Spots for professional surfers are more located in Tasmania and Western Australia.
I gave it a go with zero experience- I started by going on a long surf weekend to learn the tricks on the waves of Philip Islands’ coast at Smiths Beach (VIC). As can be seen from the photos depicted below and on your right the first little steps are made. The first tries are always the hardest but keep on paddling and practicing!
At the photo below Sebastian, an international exchange student I met, gives it a try! He's a fast-learner, look at the groovy hand gesture.
Surfing is an addictive sport; after a while you manage to stand up and ride almost flawlessly a wave (almost then). Start with a soft surfboard (a malibu) and make it step by step more difficult when you opt for a shorter or hard surfboard (shortboard, fish or gun). The picture below shows a try at Torquay which is known for its surf beaches like Bells beach and Torquay Surf Beach. Progress is made!
